As society and technology have advanced, so has the practice of engineering. Today, more areas of human endeavour are touched, created or consolidated by engineering than ever before. This has driven the development of new and specific subgroups of engineering across a wide range of industries.
For the purposes of applying for state registration, government refers to these subgroups as areas of engineering.
Most people are aware of five areas of engineering – chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and structural. Today, across the various Australian states and territories there are 16 areas of engineering.
Full descriptions of each are saved in our professional standards library. The areas of engineering and areas of practice are listed in alphabetical order and can be searched.
